Training Your Gundog for the Field: Key Commands and Drills for a Reliable Companion

Writer: Jess SmithJess Smith

A well-trained gundog is an invaluable partner in the field, enhancing the shooting experience with their ability to retrieve, flush, and remain steady under pressure - not an easy feat for your average four-legged companion! At Carter Outdoor Pursuits, we appreciate the bond between handler and dog and understand the importance of proper training, and we're privileged to shoot alongside some very talented wagging tails.

The Basics:

Teaching your gundog core commands such as sit, stay, heel, and retrieve ensures they remain under control in a shooting environment - this is the basic standard every dog and their handler should have before attending a shoot. Consistency and positive reinforcement are key to building reliability, build up training with plenty of distractions so you can be confident in your dog's abilities.

Advanced commands:

This is where things get a little more technical. It's important to note that training a dog takes time, and not every dog - regardless of breed - has what it takes. Some breeds might surprise you! It's all down to the individual dog and their handler. Exposure to the world of shooting is highly advisable from a very young age, as this is when a pup is learning about the world. Proper socialisation should be your core focus in those first few months.

Once you're confident you've got the basics covered, it's time to consider training specific for gundogs:

  • Marking drills: Train your dog to watch the fall of game and retrieve with confidence.

  • Blind retrieves: Teach your dog to retrieve game they haven’t seen fall by following directional commands.

  • Steadiness exercises: Ensure your dog remains calm and doesn’t break before being sent for a retrieve.

Preparing for the Field

Introduce your gundog gradually to shooting environments, starting with dummy retrieves before progressing to live game. Note, that exposure to gunfire should be done carefully to prevent nervousness.
